Jay County resident Chelsea Crossland has been arrested for murder and child molestation.

An arrest has made in regards to the Indiana State Police death investigation of a five year old Jay County juvenile, which occurred last week in Portland, IN.
At the request of the Jay County Prosecutor, the following official statement is being provided for public information-
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 30, 2022 The Jay County Prosecutor’s Office has filed formal charges against Chelsea L. Crossland, age 27, of 689 S Western Avenue, Portland, Indiana in connection with the death of her 5 year old son, Christian Crossland. A charge of Murder, a felony, and Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in death, a level 1 felony were filed relating to 5 year old Christian’s death. A separate charge, Child Molesting, a level 1 felony, was filed relating to an incident between Chelsea Crossland and her 9 year old daughter. The investigation was conducted by the Indiana State Police with assistance from the Portland Police Department, the Indiana Department of Child Services, the Jay County Coroner’s Office, and the Jay County Prosecutor’s Office. An arrest or criminal charge is merely an accusation of wrongdoing. The defendant is innocent until proven guilty.

Indiana State Police Investigating Death of
Five-Year-Old Child In Jay County
Jay County- Late last night, March 24, 2022, investigators with the Indiana State Police Ft. Wayne Post were requested to investigate the death of a five-year-old child.
Officers with the Portland Police Department responded to a home in the 600 block of South Western Avenue in Portland, IN last night at approximately 11:30 p.m. for a call of a five-year-old child that was unresponsive. The Portland Police Department requested that investigators from the Indiana State Police respond, and the State Police assumed the investigation.
An autopsy was conducted earlier today in Ft. Wayne. This is an ongoing and active investigation and there is no other information to release at this time. The Indiana State Police continue to work closely with the Portland Police Department, Jay County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Indiana Department of Child Services as this investigation continues.
